The Spindle Morris Chair was the forerunner of the modern recliner and is part of the 1989 reissued Mission Collection. Virtually identical to Gustav Stickley’s original design circa 1906, it features an adjustable back, wide canted arms, curved horizontal back slats, narrow spindles, and quadralinear post construction for the oak version. Available in solid oak or cherry with a choice of tight seat or loose cushions in fabric or leather.

No single piece of furniture conjures an image of comfort more than the Morris chair. Originally popularized at the English studio of William Morris in the mid-1860s, the Morris chair was quickly translated by American manufacturers, including Gustav Stickley. Patented in 1905, the original Spindle Morris Chair remains a classic favorite.
Clean lines and purity of function make the Stickley Mission Collection truly timeless. Boasting a distinguished history, yet uniquely modern, Arts and Crafts furniture signifies sophisticated comfort and solid craftsmanship.
Honesty and integrity of construction are essential tenets of Arts and Crafts furniture. The tried-and-true traditional joinery that makes it strong and long-lasting is also a visible part of the intrinsic beauty of the furniture.
“Als Ik Kan”—to the best of my ability—has always been Stickley’s guiding principle. The old Flemish craftsman’s phrase was marked right on the product in the early years, to assure customers that every piece of Stickley furniture was made with skill, determination, and integrity.
