Our Favorite Things: Stickley Staff Picks 2023

[originally posted December 2023]

Welcome to our second annual post featuring favorite Stickley products chosen by L. & J.G. Stickley employees, including pieces they own or simply have on their wish lists. This year’s selections represent a range of styles, but whether classic Mission or mid-century modern, every piece has at least one passionate fan—or even two!

Valerie Rados, Marketing Manager

“I would love to make the Surrey Hills Server with Gallery the centerpiece of my dining room someday. It’s so elegant, and the laser-cut detail is amazing. I also love that you can highlight the gallery with a built-in backlight.”

Michelle Hoffman, Vice President, Human Resources

“Experts often suggest turning your bedroom into a personal sanctuary to get the most restful sleep. For me, that would include the Highlands Bed. Its strong lines make me think of Stickley’s heritage and craftsmanship, and its style adds the coziness you want in a bedroom. I imagine it surrounded by calming hues on the wall, lasting textiles, and lots of pillows. What more could you ask for?”

Tim Tryon, Senior Designer

“The Walnut Grove Credenza is beautifully constructed with a mid-modern vibe and offers versatile uses in the dining room, living room, or office. And then there are the very cool, unexpected, and unique side doors. It’s a great example of form and function.”

Jacob Hanson, Product Engineer

“The Harvey Ellis Desk was one of the first pieces that really stood out to me when I first visited a Stickley showroom as a design intern. I was quickly becoming a fan of Harvey Ellis’ inlay designs, and the execution blew me away. I’ve also been fascinated with additional storage in large secretary desks, so seeing a smaller Deck with a high level of functionality behind the folding doors and handful of drawers was really interesting.”

Darcy Smith, Copy Director

“I saw a line drawing of the Martine Vanity Desk during its development phase, and it didn’t make a big impression. But when I saw the finished piece in person, I couldn’t stop staring and touching. It’s a combination of smooth curves, contemporary proportions, swirly cherry grain, and a glossy Coventry finish. The whole piece seems to glow. (And the Upholstered Back Armchair shown with it is another stunner that I’d love to own.)”

Joe Dunaske, Associate Designer

“In my eyes, the Mission Three-Drawer Nightstand showcases all the fundamentals of Stickley craftsmanship packed into the smallest form: pinned joints, through-tenons, a notched top around the posts, and three beautiful hand-fit drawers. The Walnut Grove End Table is a close second. The floating box on the bottom shelf makes the table so dynamic, and again, even this little box showcases Stickley craftsmanship.”

George Gikas, Vice President, Retail & Merchandising

“The Walnut Grove Spindle Bed is a beauty that I’ve had the pleasure to live in! It’s both sculptural—with magnificent spindle details and tapered legs that add style—and functional. I appreciate the sturdy walnut construction and the cantilevered base with a convenient foot rest all around. It’s mid-century modern at its best.”

Rachel LeClair, Production Artist
Maycie Morris, Web Developer

Finally, two employees chose the Martine Arced Cabinet, but in two different configurations! Rachel LeClair loves the Wardrobe: “This was one of the first pieces that I worked on, editing product photography, when I started at Stickley. I love its look and versatility, and there’s so much storage space for clothing and accessories.” Maycie Morris opts for the Bar Cabinet configuration: “I love the unique shape of the cabinet itself, as well as the tapered legs, the amount of storage it provides, and the recessed lighting in the interior.”
